Our design proposal brings the three elements of the Holmenkollbakken; the inrun, knoll and stadium together within one sculpture. The nature of the form draws upon the aesthetic that has evolved out of aerodynamic modelling in modern sports equipment design. The inrun, knoll and stadium are carefully linked by one flowing form, encompassing all the brief requirements. The design is therefore seen as one sculpture which adapts to the different needs by changing its form, section and scale following the path of the participating competitors.
Landscape / Approach
The landscape design which flows from the surrounding area leads the visitors to and around the new stadium. Gentle sculpting of the landscape leads the visitor into an outer ring which follows the skin and directs the public towards the entrances.
The bowl which sits in the landscape is constructed from concrete with an exposed natural finish. A high gloss carbon fibre finish creates the second skin which rises out of the ground and flows towards the inrun at the highest point of the jump. The contrast of the natural matt concrete finish and the high gloss skin will add to the dynamic nature of both the form and the high energy sport itself. The ‘Rim’ of the Stadium bowl encompasses the spectator galleries and other accommodation.
Aerodynamics
The idea to introduce a permanent solution for the wind protection is one of the key concepts driving the design. The section develops along its length from a horizontal section into a vertical section at the part of the run where it is needed most.
Unlike any other ski jump in the world this design brings together the activity of the skier through its journey with an expressive, flowing sculptural form. It sits in the landscape proudly to create a bold yet gentle building.
